• 3 DIGIT GUARDALA HANDMADE MB1 .117"

    $1,995.00Price

HERE IS AN ORIGINAL CONDITION 1980'S DAVE GUARDALA HANDMADE GOLD MICHAEL BRECKER MODEL 1. IT IS MARKED "DG  MB" SERIAL 326. EARLY HANDMADE, 3 DIGIT SERIAL PIECES IN ORIGINAL CONDITION ARE GETTING NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND. THE WRITING IS VERY FAINT UNDER THE PLATING LOSS.

THIS PARTICULAR MOUTHPIECE COMES FROM A TORONTO STUDIO MUSICIAN WHO HAS PLAYED THIS SETUP FOR NEARLY 20 YEARS AS HIS 'DAILY DRIVER'. HOW WELL THIS PIECE HAS BEEN ENJOYED IS EVIDENT BY THE PLATING LOSS BUT OTHERWISE EXCELLENT SHAPE OF THE STRUCTURE OF THE MOUTHPIECE. THE FACING ON THIS PIECE IS INTACT BUT LIKE MANY EARLY GUARDALAS, SUFFERS FROM SLIGHT PLATING WEAR FROM PROFESSIONAL USE. THE FACING SCHEDULE IS WHERE DAVE LEFT IT WITH THE MOST NOTICEABLE WEAR OCCURING OF THE BREAK OF THE CURVE. PLATING IS ABOUT % 20, NOT UNCOMMON FOR THIS ERA OF GUARDALA.

EXAMINING THIS  MOUTHPIECE WE SEE SOME OF THE FEATURES THAT MAKE IT DISTINCTIVE. THIS MOUTHPIECE HAS A LONG STEP BAFFLE THAT DROPS INTO A LOW SECONDARY RAMP MUCH LIKE A DUKOFF SUPER POWER CHAMBER. DAVE'S INNOVATION HERE IS THE WIDE WINDOW, AND VERY OPEN THROAT THAT EXPANDS INTO A DEEP CHAMBER. THE LOWER RAMP BLENDS NICELY WITH THE ACTUAL FLOOR OF THE CHAMBER.  THE RESULT IS A VERY POWERFUL AND FLEXIBLE DESIGN THAT CAN BE USED ON A VARIETY OF HORNS.

DAVE GUARDALA WAS AN INNOVATIVE MANUFACTURER WHO BEGAN HIS BUSINESS BY HAND MACHININING BLANKS AND FINISHING THEM OUT WITH FILES. HE WAS ABLE TO ACHIEVE DIFFERNENT LEVELS OF BRIGHTNESS BY CHANGING THE INTERNAL GEOMETRY EITHER BY CHANGING CHAMBER SIZE OR THE HEIGHT AND LENGTH OF THE BAFFLE OR A COMBINATION OF BOTH. HE ORIGINALLY BECAME FAMOUS BY MAKING MOUTHPIECES FOR THE LIKES OF DAVE LIEBMAN, BILL EVANS, BRANFORD MARSALIS, TOM SCOTT AND OF COURSE, MICHAEL BRECKER.
