Guardala Handmade, Special Dark Traditional Gold plate, Original
Here is an original condition 1980's Dave Guardala Handmade tenor. It is marked "DG Spec. Dark Trad". Early handmade Guardalas in original condition are getting nearly impossible to find. This fact is especially true for one of a kind models such as this particular one. This mouthpiece measures .108" on my gauge.
This particular mouthpiece is part of a collection of mouthpieces belonging to a career musician who bought this piece himself when it was first made available in Toronto sometime in the late 1980's.
Examining this Special Dark Traditional Model, we see some of the features that are found on Mike Brecker's personal Guardala, notably the rounding off of the step baffle and seamless transition into a very deep chamber. This mouthpiece features a high initial step baffle design for a very powerful sound.
Dave Guardala was an innovative manufacturer who began his custom line of mouthpieces by manually machining blanks and finishing them by hand. He was able to provide a variety of geometries by changing the interior geometry by either changing the chamber size, or the height and length of the baffle or a combination of both. Original customers of Dave Guardala included Bill Evans, Michael Brecker, Tom Scott, Branford Marsalis and others.
